The Nobel Prize for economics was awarded to Harvard professor Claudia Goldin on Monday, becoming just the third woman to be honored with the accolade in recognition of her research explaining why fewer women work and why they earn less than men.

Goldin “trawled the archives and collected over 200 years of data from the U.S.” to interrogate the changing fortunes and representation of women in the labor market, said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm that awards the prize.
