There’s no denying that we are a society that is collectively fascinated with true crime. But why are we so obsessed? Maybe it’s a bit of could-this-happen-to-me-or-someone-I-love? Or, perhaps we wonder if we could ever be pushed off that sharp-edged cliff into the abyss of insanity?

Whatever the root of the obsession, we cannot satiate our appetite for the whodunit or the whydunit, and Peacock’s new dramedy-slash-(pun intended)-thriller Based On A True Story brilliantly satirizes not the horrific crimes but that incessant need for us to play armchair detective.
