The first Facebook post about Professor Meareg Amare appeared five weeks before his murder.
The 60-year-old professor was known to be a pillar of his community in Bahir Dar, the capital of Ethiopia’s Amhara region. He had authored four widely used chemistry textbooks for middle- and high-school students, and sometimes appeared on local TV, where he encouraged young people to pursue the sciences.
