Republican congressman Kevin McCarthy was on course to lose a seventh round of voting in his ill-fated bid to become Speaker of the House on Thursday, even after offering fresh concessions to more than a dozen members of his own party.
Despite the last-ditch attempt to quell opposition and secure the votes he needs to be elected Speaker of the House by McCarthy, at least eight Republicans voted against him in a seventh round of voting on Thursday, marking the third day the House of Representatives has been in session without selecting a Speaker.
